Last Tuesday, the artist, sculptor, and all-around mad scientist Seth Kinmont, best known for his whimsical but eminently functional Pyrex wine still, debuted his latest art curiosity, a wooden electric buggy, outside Project Number 8 on the Lower East Side. The car, which takes aesthetic inspiration from Amish wagons and turn-of-the-century hearses, looked marvelously anachronistic as it bore guests on several dozen quick spins through the New York City streets. Unfortunately, halfway through the evening it busted an axle, and though that could be fixed with a quick spot-weld, it meant the rides were done for the night. Kinmont, who built the car in Long Island and Upstate New York, has two more electric car creations planned, which he plans to get to work on soon on property he owns in Bishop, California.
