Liam Gillick, June Issue of the German Research Bulletin Pasteboard and July Issue of the German Research Bulletin Pasteboard
The current show at Air de Paris, “La Recherche” (research), gives visibility to the ongoing search—in art as in science—for information, patterns, and truth. Liam Gillick’s June Issue of the German Research Service Bulletin Pasteboard and July Issue of the German Research Service Bulletin Pasteboard, a pair of instruction pieces the artist realized in 1992, are reconstituted wood panels that dissect systems of reading and editing scientific research reports, as well as contemporary art. Similarly, Philippe Parreno’s Postman Time—a poster image documenting the artist’s participation in Il Tempo del Postino, the opera that he realized with Hans Ulrich Obrist (to be performed next at the Basel Theatre during Art Basel, June 10-14)—highlights the artist’s examinations of identity, representation, and voice. Meanwhile, Trisha Donnelly’s untitled new audio piece, Untitled 2009, explores the distortion of voice by playing with comic slips in translation. And in Leonor Antunes’s Folded Back Against the Pillars, a reappraisal of architect and designer Eileen Gray’s 1920s modernist landmark Villa E-1027, the artist captures the sculptural language of Eva Hesse, while showing an easy touch with material experimentation.
