Over thirty indie galleries from around the world are exhibiting in a Lars von Trier’s Dogville inspired space. Walls are not allowed – each gallery space is marked with strips of masking tape on the floor.
Welcome to “No Soul for Sale – A Festival of Independents” produced by the non-profit arts organization X-Initiative.
One stand out piece is the intricate construction by Robert Carr which seems to float in air.
“The uses mathematical formulas like algorithms to create 3D representations on a computer,” explains Thisisnotashop gallery director Jessamyn Fiore who represents Carr. “Then he re-constructs the shape through tiny pieces of paper. Depending on from what angle you look at it, it can look very solid or it can almost disappear. It constantly moves and changes in front of your eyes.”
Mrs Fiore also represents Wendy Judge, a Dublin-based artist who creates miniature landscapes representing forbidden sites, such as nuclear testing facilities. One of her sculptures is a mini-nuclear cloud made out of wax, the shape funnily enough based on a cauliflower.
Each gallery also gets a slot on the ground-floor communal space to stage a live performance, that changes hourly.
The aim of the event is to foster creative exchange and to offer shows to under-represented artists in New York and an exciting alternative to the commercial art market. More details and pics after the jump.
