BEST OF #NYFW: JOHANNES FAKTOTUM

| February 18, 2011

Ice climbing, Olafur Eliasson’s Weather Project, early ’90s outdoor ski apparel, and Gucci Mane were among the references listed that inspired JOHANNES FAKTOTUM’s menswear collection for Fall 2011. The combination of wool fleece with a drop-crotch silhouette, weatherproof jackets, and fabric printed with reflective glass helped converge the hip hop and extreme outdoor elements into a whole. Complete merino wool sets were intriguing when paired with functional outdoor accessories like bungee cords, reflective snow goggles, and snow boots. Protective hoods and bandanas emphasized the masculine tech aspect to the collection, but with added comfort in soft knit variations.

Two of the highlights to FAKTOTUM this season were both the blue/gray/neon yellow spectrum of colors and also the beautiful night footage through which the items were presented. On vertical plasma flat-screen televisions, JF presented atmospheric video shot by Jonathan Turner in the mountains of upstate New York. The footage is lit to spotlight the reflective properties of the material and the environment provides a lucid canvas upon which to convey the season’s concept and conviction.
