A standout presentation on the New York Fashion Week calendar has consistently been that of architect-turned-menswear-designer Siki Im. This season, Im sustained his expanding thread of pairing traditional indigenous layering with sharp, asymmetrical cut and fit. The result was an arresting and rustic collection that lent new impetus to the term “American Gothic”.
Hand-woven marital kilts and rugs (made in collaboration with Tahnibaa Nataani, a fifth-generation Navajo weaver based in New Mexico) punctuated a lineup which also included boiled wool jackets and trousers, lapel-less kimono blazers, frayed hemlines, Appaloosa hats, and symmetrical braids tousled with fake fur and feathers. It evoked traditional American Native headdress and also True Grit; Coen Brothers via Comme des Garçons. Adorning circular jewelry by Eugene conjured imagery of a solar eclipse: fitting considering what Siki Im achieved in New York this week.
