Sweden’s new vodka goes organic

| September 14, 2011

Swedes love to drink, and the country boasts more than a few great vodkas to choose from. But one more never hurts. Particularly since the latest—it’s called Kanon Organic Vodka—is well, organic. The spirit company producing it took us and a few friends out to Scandinavia recently to give it a swill. Upon landing in Stockholm, we toured through the old town, speed boated through the archipelago, and ate some delicious meatballs. Day two found us packing our over night bags and heading west to the gorgeous little town of Marifred; the main draw there being the famed Gripsholm Castle, situated on Lake Mälaren and easily visible from Sweden’s oldest inn, Gripsholm Inn, where we happily stayed and loved every minute of it.

Another draw was a tour of Kanon’s distillery and surrounding grounds, which features the grand summer home of Peter Hjelm, Kanon’s founder and creator, and his garage packed with a choice selection of vintage cars. This was all rounded out by one of the best meals of our lives, complimented by Kanon’s in-house genius mixologist Stefanie Marco. Marco made one of the most fascinating concoctions I’ve ever tried: the Yum Yoke, a molecular wonder bursting with grapefruity effervescence. On the final night, we traveled back to Stockholm for the official Kanon launch party, DJ’d by the lovely and über adorable Lykke Li, with a performance by the Shout Out Louds, who played for the most packed and gorgeous audience this correspondent has seen in a very long time. Though you may want to take that with a grain of salt—after all we had been drinking vodka for 3 days.
