SUMMER 2012

Dolce&Gabbana Barbiere

I didn’t have time to get a haircut in New York before leaving for this season’s men’s shows, and my hair had gotten to the point where it wasn’t just long, it was annoying. So on my last day in Milan, I stopped by the Dolce & Gabbana Barbiere, an old-school barbershop which opened in its own digs on Corso Venezia last January, after operating for years out of the back of the Dolce & Gabbana men’s boutique next door.

You enter through a sleek, wood-paneled reception area where the full line of Dolce & Gabbana men’s perfumes and Art of Shaving products are elegantly displayed, before being escorted upstairs to a small room with two classic barber chairs. The space is a bit slick, with sinks and counters all done in black marble, but the overall experience is refreshingly understated and unpretentious. Simply dressed in white dress shirts and black slacks, the barbers cut with minimum fuss and maximum efficiency—a flurry of scissor blades and frenzied combing, with a razor at the end to get rid of the peach fuzz (and give you a little shape-up, if that’s your thing). My haircut was a collaborative affair, with the younger barber doing the bulk of the work before turning over the shears to his older colleague, who did a little fine-tuning while I tried to keep from bouncing my head to the classic soul music that was playing quietly in the room. When he was finished, the older gentleman stood back and observed, arms crossed, occasionally proffering a word of advice, while the younger guy blow-dried me, vigorously styled my hair, and finished with a generous dusting of talcum powder.

I left with as good a haircut as I’ve gotten anywhere, and despite the language barrier, it was exactly what I’d asked for. You can also get a shave or beard trim, as the rather woolly fellow in the chair next to me was doing. The shop’s aesthetics are definitely polished and boutique-y, but at heart, it’s not so different from a place like FSC Barber, New York City’s retro men’s barbershop par excellence. And at €32 for a haircut, the price is nice. Stop by if you ever find yourself in Milan and need a trim.

The Dolce & Gabbana Barbiere is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Corso Venezia, 13; phone: +39 02 76028485
