Michael Bastian’s new collection for the original Connecticut prepsters at Gant is a game changer for the brand. In a matter of months, with the help of Mr. Bastian, Gant has pushed ahead into the forefront of men’s sportswear. The universally loved presentation last Saturday was refreshingly complimented by the location: St Anthony’s Gym on Thompson Street. And within the gym? A locker room, complete with shower and dripping wet models in only a crisp, white Gant towel on one side, with an area designated for herringbone suits, spectacular trenches and dapper graphic knitwear on the other. Bastian seemed to be glowing amidst the large crowd that had formed to admire his new work. We asked how the collaboration had resonated with him. “Well now I feel like I know what it’s like to have two kids,” he remarked. “The Gant kid is sweet and sporty, and my own collection is definitely the more complicated one.”
