Spanish textile artist Irene Alvarez creates neo-ethnic, hyper-tribal psychedelic prints often incorporating images of aliens, skulls, and Disneyana, and has shown her work everywhere from Belgium to Viena to Holland. Now, the promising artist has not only collaborated with designer Mic Eaton (formerly of Material Boy) on a series of Totem T-Shirts, but she is proud to showcase a new series of tapestries—prosaically titled TURN ME OP—at New York City’s Seven New York boutique.
“I remember watching Fantasia as a kid and feeling completely psyched by the dreamy animations,” Alvarez says of her iconic inspiration, manifested in the formed of plural-eyed Mickey Mouses and Bambis in her work. “But the biggest influence has been my research with optical illusions. I have been working with a textile laboratory in the Netherlands to create a hologram effect with the yarns and the weaving technique, making traditional tapestry fresh again. The artworks are hung the same way a tapestry is, but some of my pieces, like the Typee, can be worn as a cape.”
The TURN ME OP tapestries and Totem T-shirts are available at Seven New York. For more images of Alvarez’s work, hit the jump.

Awesome! These prints are really nice. Would not have expected a Disney inspiration to be behind them. Very interesting!
