GUCCI AT THE MOVIES

The fashion plate is also a classic film buff

May 14, 2010

Gucci likes to watch—classic films, that is. Since 2006, it’s been indulging its passion by partnering up with the Film Foundation, an organization devoted to restoring iconic pieces of movie history. Now, the curtain is being raised on its latest contributions: Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) and Luchino Visconti’s Il Gattapardo (1963) were brought back to their original Technicolor glory with a $900,000 donation from the design house, which now has six restorations and nearly $2.5 million in donations to its credit.

Since the former was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963, it seems apt (if not a bit backwards) that the latter should make its theatrical re-debut tonight, during the Festival’s 63rd anniversary. Unquestionably appropriate, though, will be its introduction by Film Foundation president (and Gucci’s fellow Italian cinephile) Martin Scorcese; and tomorrow night’s exclusive dinner party at the Hotel du Cap, hosted by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini and Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter. Who needs Imax, anyway?
