SUMMER 2012

| May 9, 2012

Only the BraveWe need to be brave in these challenging times, but what counts as brave these days? For Diesel founder Renzo Rosso, a clenched fist signifies bravery, which accounts for the unusual shape of the bottle that houses the brand’s new men’s fragrance, Only the Brave. According to Diesel, the scent itself communicates bravery by balancing aromatic opposites, with notes of lemon, leather, and cedar. Diesel launched Only the Brave last Thursday with an exhibit at Openhouse Gallery in New York City which saw several dozen artists from the creative collective the Keystone Design Union (KDU) offer their own interpretations of bravery: KDU founders David Gensler and Aerosyn Lex created a mosaic from interlocking pieces of birchwood that incorporates calligraphic artwork and letters spelling out “bravery,” photographer Eric Vogel shot portraits of teenage African-American albino model Shaun Ross, and Guatemalan artist Edgar Gonzalez exhibited a drawing of a cityscape that he spent four years creating (he drew a single panel every day on the subway, connecting the pieces from memory). The work will be exhibited again later this week at follow-up launches in Miami and Los Angeles, but New Yorkers can stop by the Diesel Denim Gallery in Soho throughout the month of May to see two exhibits there, including Gensler’s collection of dozens of antique shears (pictured) suspended from the gallery ceiling like an ominous mobile.
