So here’s a story about an idiot photographer who decided to shoot last night’s VMAN ice-skating party on blades. For the first time! What was I thinking? And why didn’t I listen to Patrick McMullan’s advice? Four times he told me, “You’re lookin’ for trouble,” and he was right. Of course I bit it—big time, like someone falling after trying a triple salchow, landing on my face in front of the whole party and smashing my camera to the ice. What’re you gonna do, right? And, honestly, it’s not the bump on my head or bruised hip that killed my night. It was not being able to photograph all the beautiful faces that turned out to celebrate VMAN Ford Model Search winners Jake and CJ on their VMAN 13 covers, shot by Peter Lindbergh.
Fashion and ice skating—quite a concept, eh? Half the party came to skate and never left the ice, while the other half came to look fabulous and hit the bar for some free end-of-fashion-week liquor courtesy of Belvedere IX and Arizona Vapor Water courtesy of Arizona Iced Tea (helpful for fighting dehydration brought on by the combination of booze and skating). Apparently I wasn’t the only one who had an off night. Leigh Lezark (who had been dying to skate) was rushed to the hospital after slicing her finger on a blade just hours before she had to catch a plane to London. And CK model Lenz Von Johnston (who is actually an excellent skater) bit it during a bold impromptu solo performance after imbibing a few too many cocktails and swapping his good skates for mine (which sucked).
Everyone was there! Oksana Baiul, Ryan Lochte, Mario Testino, Kanye West, Hannelore, Italo Zucchelli, Stephen Gan, Cecilia Dean (who was on the ice for hours), Carine Roitfeld, Christian Brylle, pro surfer Danny Fuller, Anne Christensen, Brad Kroenig, Zac Posen, Victor Alfaro, Clint Mauro, a dozen cute Ford Model boys skating around in long johns, Hamish Bowles (who was so cute on the ice), Sebastian Faena, Sofia Achaval, Yigal Azrouël, Michael Stipe, Paz de La Huerta, Byrdie Bell, Richie Rich, Paul Sevigny, Toni Garrn, Ali Stephens, Karlie Kloss, Bruna Tenorio, Viviane Orth, Patricia Schmid, Patrik Ervell, Ellen Von Unwerth, Ollie Edwards, Rogier Bosschaart, my girl Stacey Mackenzie, and of course, Johnny Weir, who capped off the night with a one-of-a-kind figure-skating performance. Plus, so many others who I couldn’t take pictures of because I got cocky on the ice and decided to show off for Byrdie Bell. Anyhoo… Great party! Great night!
Special thanks to Belvedere IX, Arizona Iced Tea, and Ice Theatre of New York.

So wh!at happened to US National Champ and World Bronze medalist Johnny Weir, who was set to do a number to Lady Ga Ga’s Poker face? Where’s the photos of Johnny Weir who also modeled for Heatherette, although I don’t have to tell you that! And if he was there, why weren’t you paying hommage to the single most famous and popular skater per Stars On Ice and American Skating fans polls, as well as your own guest? I’d really like to know how you thought some of these other skaters came close to his persona. Or was he training because he had something more important to do?
