SUMMER 2012

| May 9, 2012

Lykke LiPop music gets a bad name these days among those who are serious about their listening, and for good reason. But despite all the soulless, made-by-committee, made-for-MTV dreck around us, it’s worth remembering that it’s possible to dance, look good, and actually feel something all at the same time. The connection between the heart and the dance floor is at the heart of Youth Novels (LL Recordings), the full-length debut from 22-year-old Swedish pop phenom Lykke Li, whose creative sensibilities and wildly romantic yearnings bridge the gap between Björk and Kylie. With sparkly production courtesy of Björn Yttling (of Peter Björn & John), tunes like “Little Bit” and “I’m Good, I’m Gone” have enough swagger to put any club in motion, but it’s Li’s sweet-and-sour lyrics—“For you I keep my legs apart / Don’t think about my tainted heart”—that provide the real kick.
