Hot on the heels of this year’s LP Wit’s End, the prolific and poetic singer-songwriter Cass McCombs has announced that he will release another full-length record within this same year: Humor Risk, on November 8 via Domino. Posited as a more optimistic counterpart to the sullen and moving release from earlier in the year, the artist has debuted the album’s first single “The Same Thing”, as if to prove the point that he is not at all giving us—the same thing. Get it? Unequivocally excellent, the tune moves along at a mid-tempo marching beat as the lyrics reason “pain and love are the same thing.” The track layers over itself, pauses for a ’60s-tinted harpsichord reprieve, and clocks out at 6 minutes and 12 seconds. It feels like a classic and we’ve only just met. Listen below.
