Designer Georgina Vendrell brings her Catalan flair to ropa masculina, creating fashion-forward designs with couture-worthy details. Her fall ’09 collection mixes blouson shapes with elements of classic tailoring in all varieties of wool, leather and fur that take on the colors of the arctic night sky.
In a VMAN exclusive photoshoot, Georgina Vendrell’s clothes make us say “¡Qué guay!” And for a special treat, look for our interview with the designer where she discusses the inspiration for this collection.

You seem to be a rare breed, a woman designing menswear. What drew you to menswear?
Many people are surprised by that and ask me this. While in school at ICM (Institut Català de la Moda), I studied womenswear, and I got tired of it. Also, the womenswear market is saturated. I wanted to do something different. Today, it’s easier to be innovative in menswear designs. More men are interested in fashion and are looking for something special.
Your Fall 09 collection was inspired by Finland, but do we see any elements of Catalan culture in your work or inspiration?
I like doing winter collections, and I wanted to do one for a very cold winter. Finland, with its dark winter contrasted with the colors of the aurora borealis was a great inspiration to me. In Catalonia there is a rich and interesting culture. In Barcelona, where I spend most of my time, you can breathe in the style of the modernism movement. In the Fall 09 collection you don’t see so much of my Catalan roots, but for my Spring/Summer ’10 collection you can feel it, mostly in the coloring.
