Spoek Mathambo

November 12, 2010

Kicking off with an ominous, gravelly voice repeating ˝Don’t be scaaaaaared” over a dirty township beat, Spoek Mathambo’s debut LP ”Mishini Wan” brings the tension early on and doesn’t let up til its death-threat laden closing track. And in-between, the Johannasberg native (born Nthato James Monde Mokgata) takes listeners on a wild ride through the South African underground, full of heavy tribal precussion, angry political raps, and even a creepy-but-danceable cover of Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control.”   With all its genre-hopping and politics, an easy comparison would be M.I.A., but ”Mishini Wan” shows no signs of uncontrollable ego or self-concsious posturing. To kick off our new VMix series, Spoek has put together an exclusive mix of tunes, covering everything from old-school funk to new-school kwaito.  Check out Spoek Mathambo exclusive mix for VMagazine.com.
