SUMMER 2012

Younger Than JesusIf you feel a bit bewildered after viewing the New Museum’s “Younger Than Jesus” exhibition, which opened last month, Phaidon’s forthcoming Younger Than Jesus: Artist Directory aims to help make sense of things. Dubbed “the essential handbook to the future of art,” the tome reflects the ambition of the New Museum’s eponymous generational triennial and its unusual curatorial process. Its preparation involved 150 “informants” internationally, who recommended a total of 500 artists, all under age 33. Even if just a tenth of them were eventually selected for the exhibition, every one is represented with a page in what will certainly come to be seen as the yellow pages of global contemporary art, from Abbas, Hamra, to Zucconi, Damon. Unlike the publishing house’s previous attempts to offer snapshots of today’s art (the seminal Cream, Fresh Cream, Cream 3, and Ice Cream), Younger than Jesus: Artist Directory‘s wealth of images leaves close to no room for information about each artist, resulting in a highly visual survey of contemporary practices, from takes on Op Art (Tauba Auerbach) to resurgent conceptual art (Pak Sheung Chuen).
