Fourteen Black, acrylic and wood, dimensions vary, Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, 2011.
A new, “extra-large” edition of ®Nova (Rojo®Nova) has set-up shop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The festival for contemporary culture overtakes two astonishing venues: the Fundação Casa França-Brasil and Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. 130 artists have contributed work-in-progress pieces to the six week exhibition, including artist Tofer Chin, who’s created the installation pictured here. Entitled “Fourteen Black,” the black stalagmite sculptures will “live and breathe throughout the lush environment” surrounding the Parque Lage. The aim of the installation is to invite a sense of discovery in the quite unnatural reflection and absorption of light that the pieces provoke. “The Stalagmites are living and breathing souls,” Chin says. “Ghosts, spirits, voids, and shadows.” More images from the exhibition can be found below. The exhibit runs through April 30, 2011.
