SUMMER 2012

Frank Lloyd Wright at the GuggenheimTo coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s landmark building on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is presenting the exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, which opened Friday to coincide with the launch of New York Design Week. During his prolific career (with more than a thousand projects spanning seventy years), Wright’s vision changed the history of 20th century architecture. His life’s work and ideas were independent of any single style while breaking from conventional notions of architecture. With his commercial, civic, and residential designs, he sought to unite people, buildings, and nature in harmony. To illustrate the diversity of Wright’s innovations, the exhibition includes sixty-four projects designed by the American architect. Along the spiral ramps are original drawings and newly commissioned three-dimensional scale models and digital animations that provide an insight into Wright’s unrealized and demolished projects. Walking past the multimedia displays, one realizes not only how far ahead of his time Wright was, but also his continuing relevance to contemporary architecture. With previous retrospectives showcasing of the work of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, it’s only fitting that the Guggenheim is now staging a retrospective of Wright in what is arguably his most famous building.

Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward is on view until August 23, 2009.
