SUMMER 2012

May 9, 2012

The bizarre time-travel sensation of wandering around the vast dead city of Pompeii is unparalleled. Buried in ash by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, a visit to Pompeii is truly an awe-inspiring journey. It was visceral and enlightening to experience history outside of a museum and have a literal “hands on” connection with the remnants of an ancient civilization.

Be sure to wear sneakers and bring sun block. Six exhaustive hours of trudging around the uneven cobblestones wasn’t enough time to see everything. Oh we shall be back. Yes, indeed.

The Fires of Vesuvius by Mary Beard is a wonderful primer for anyone interested in the ancient Roman world or in visiting Pompeii. Beard’s account of the city eschews conjecture and assembles the facts into a fluid, often humorous, account that doesn’t read like a stiff textbook.

Here are a few of our vacation photos. If you are offended by sculpted penises, please look away. The phallus was a very common symbol in Pompeii and was thought to have been a symbol of luck and fertility. One of the phalli below is on a cobblestone and pointed towards a brothel with stone beds. Enjoy!
