On the HOV lane:
L.A. is really dynamic because unlike NY, which is kind of a one-gear city, you can choose to get in the rat race if you want, going to parties in your shortest shorts, dress up real nice and hang out in fancy places or you can sit back and stay out of the rat-race and never even see that whole scene. It’s two different worlds, life in and out of the HOV lane. Living here feels like having two different color sunglasses looking at the same thing, which is totally exceptional.

On his morning routine:
Every morning I wake up at whatever hour, walk over 50 feet, and get a coffee with my glasses on—because you're not yet ready to take your glasses off and be vulnerable to the world. Then I usually take off my sandals and sit Indian style on a barstool and stare out at whatever and try to think of nothing. Staring is like dwelling, it's a meditation for me trying to find stillness in the city and see what pops in the old noggin' and go back to the piano and write something—amazing to do that in Hollywood because what your staring at changes so much everyday.

On Drew Barrymore and the set of Whip It:
Every positive thing that you might imagine about her is entirely true, seeing her everyday on set was a totally comforting experience and really an honor that she chose me. On set it was really cool because it was an ensemble cast, everyone in it was tried and true, so no one was interested in trying to keep up this persona, there was no hierarchy, only total confidence. We filmed in Detroit which is kind of a rustic city, lots of urban tumbleweed and when your up against new territory like that, everyone gets really close. After shooting we would all go out and do Detroit things, go to bars, go bowling and stuff. Almost like having a fake ID in high school and going to the city with your friends. You and your clan against the world.
